Builders of single-family homes can often afford to purchase thicker materials. There is more time involved in building the structure. Often, single-family homes are built to custom specifications, and as a result, the materials used are usually much better than those used in apartments.

Often, there are no more than a few sheets of drywall between apartments, and drywall has practically no soundproofing qualities. This is why many people use other soundproofing materials, such as green glue and sound panels.

The biggest reason apartments are made with such thin walls comes down to the builders attempting to keep costs at a minimum. In most situations, unless the apartment is classified as a “luxury apartment,” the manufacturers don’t see a point in using extra materials to benefit from higher sound reduction.

They essentially catch the sound so that it can’t travel anymore. I’ll talk about this more in a few minutes.

With all this in mind, the real problem is not the thickness of the apartment walls. Instead, it’s the fact that there isn’t anything but open air between the walls. This means that the sound vibrations can travel freely through them.

Every time a sound vibration happens in one apartment, it begins to travel until it encounters something that reduces it to the point of stopping. The problem is that the sound wave begins in one space, goes straight through the wall, and eventually stops somewhere in the apartment next to it. The air acts as a conductor for sound, similar to how certain metals act as conductors for electricity.

How to Stop Hearing Your Neighbors Through Walls

Normally, soundproofing happens in the initial building process. This is because the best soundproofing occurs by insulating the interior walls. Apartments are, in general, not very well insulated. This causes more problems than just sound coming through. It also means that heat and cold are lost, and the temperature often fluctuates widely inside apartments.

Between the temperature and sound problems, you may wonder why anyone chooses to live in an apartment. When it comes down to it, the truth is that despite the problems with apartments, they’re still significantly more cost-efficient. With that in mind, if you’re one of the many people living in an apartment, you probably want to know how you can start reducing sound-related issues.

As mentioned, soundproofing usually occurs through heavy insulation in the walls. This can present a problem in apartments because you can’t take apart the walls and add in your own insulation or other soundproofing materials. That means it’s time to get creative.

The panels are made from heavy foam, which stops most sound in its tracks. As I mentioned, sound travels through the air. When the sound encounters the acoustic panels, it gets absorbed into the panels.

Usually, acoustic panels are hung directly on the wall, but sometimes they’re placed on the floor. This is one of the easiest and most effective solutions for soundproofing because of the way that these panels are installed.

Acoustic panels are typically installed by simply peeling off the backing of the panel and sticking it to the wall. Some require you to use nails or screws to install them, but this is rare. 

One thing I want to mention, however, is that acoustic panels are built to reduce the sound traveling outside the room where they are placed. If placed in your neighbor’s apartments, the panels would work significantly better at reducing sound for you.

This is because the panels are flat on one side but usually textured on the other. They are designed for the sound waves to hit the textured side first and be drastically reduced before moving through to the flat side. When the acoustic panels are used backward, the sound encounters the flat side first and isn’t reduced as much.

Despite this, the panels are still excellent and remain the second best out of any other options we’ll discuss below.

The downside to acoustic panels is that they’re usually pricier than other soundproofing materials.

Noise Reducing Curtains & Soundproofing Blankets

Both noise-reducing curtains and soundproofing blankets work the same. They limit the amount of sound that can travel from one area to another.

Typically noise reducing curtains are hung over windows, which helps to reduce the sound that comes from outside. Windows significantly contribute to sound bouncing through your apartment, both from the window itself and the walls.

Soundproofing blankets are also often hung over windows and tend to work equally as well as noise-reducing curtains.

However, you can also use both tools on the wall. While they will help reduce some noise on the windows, you’ll see them shine if you hang them on the walls directly. This way, they’ll catch the sound directly and work towards reducing the sound vibrations.

The only problem with noise-reducing curtains and soundproofing blankets is that they aren’t aesthetically pleasing. They take up a lot of space and make it impossible to hang any artwork.

Artwork

Speaking of artwork, let’s talk about how this can help to reduce sound in your apartment. Artwork works like most other sound-reducing materials – it catches the sound waves as they come through.

Artwork doesn’t always do a great job, and it works best if combined with other sound-reducing methods, such as carpet or noise-reducing curtains. However, bigger art pieces especially will help to block out some of the noise.

This helps because the art provides an extra barrier that the sound waves must travel through before reaching your ears. Surprisingly, this can be an enormous help if the artwork is strategically placed where the most of the sound is coming through.

It’s best to choose heavier and thicker paintings as they absorb sound the best.

Mass Loaded Vinyl

Mass-loaded vinyl was introduced in the 1960s as an effective soundproofing option and has been used ever since. While this material works extraordinarily well – about the same as acoustic panels – it can make an ugly sight.

Mass-loaded vinyl only comes in black and is utilized by rolling it over the floor or screwing it into walls. You will sometimes see it utilized in gyms because it also does a great job of reducing echo from equipment.

Mass-loaded vinyl is made of limp vinyl with metal pieces added to it to help increase its mass. All these materials combined help reduce the sound that is coming through your walls drastically.

One of the best parts about using this alternative over acoustic panels is that you’ll get the same sound reduction quality regardless of textures. The mass-loaded vinyl is flat on both sides and will reduce the sound coming from the other side of the wall just as effectively as it will reduce sound going out from your apartment to your neighbors.

In my opinion, mass-loaded vinyl is also reasonably cost-effective, making it the best choice. While it doesn’t add the aesthetic appeal that acoustic panels do, it does the job just as well, if not better, and it achieves this for a cheaper cost. Plus, the installation is as simple as rolling it out on your floor.

Carpet & Rugs

Surprisingly, carpets and rugs work pretty well for reducing sound. This is because sound quickly bounces around hard floors.

Hard floors have very little ability to absorb sound waves, so when they encounter them, the sound simply echoes off of the tile or wood. Carpets and rugs, on the other hand, catch the sound and help to reduce the amount of noise that gets bounced off.

This can reduce your apartment’s noise level by absorbing some sounds from the walls before they reach your ears. When utilizing carpets and rugs, thicker is better. Low-height carpets will work about as well as hardwood floors, but thicker materials will absorb the sound much better.

Even if you already have carpet in your apartment, you can lay thick rugs over the carpet, which will dampen the amount of sound you hear.

However, you should know that this won’t solve the problem completely. It will just limit the amount of noise coming through. Carpets and rugs are best combined with other soundproofing methods.

According to federal and state laws, unreasonable noise is defined as any type of noise that is not in accordance with local noise ordinance standards. These laws dictate which noise levels are allowed during different times of day and night. In addition, they refer to all types of noise, be it industrial, residential, or commercial.

Every state has its own regulations that determine quiet hours and acceptable decibel levels during this time. Furthermore, some states might even leave that decision to counties and cities, with each of them having different rules based on their geographical location, population, and so on.

What Can Be Considered Unreasonable Noise?

When talking about unreasonable noise, people usually refer to industrial noise. This term includes all sounds made by industrial machinery, vehicles, workers at construction sites, road repairs, etc. In order to be allowed, such noise cannot exceed the legal limit that each state/county/city determines.

However, unreasonable noise does not have to be purely industrial. In fact, neighborly unreasonable noise is one of the biggest causes of reports in most states. This type of noise includes parties, loud music, arguments, uncontrolled pet noises (usually dogs barking), or doing some type of construction or renovation on one’s home.

In addition, unreasonable noise can also include loud lawnmowers, motorcycles, cars, and even singing or screaming. As long as it is happening within quiet hours and is too loud, pretty much any sound can be classified as unreasonable.

Why Is Noise Control Necessary?

Noise control is important because a lack thereof can lead to serious consequences for the health and overall well-being of residents. That is especially the case in urban areas, where excess noise from construction sites and vehicles poses a significant problem.

Studies show that frequent exposure to loud noises can lead to hearing damage and loss. In addition, it can cause severe anxiety, depression, as well as sleep disturbances.

Of course, loud noise also impedes you from being able to concentrate well. That can be a significant problem if you have to work or study from home. However, it is just as much of a nuisance if you simply want to enjoy a quiet afternoon or evening at home.

Loud Neighbors

People are usually able to escape most types of unreasonable noise. For example, road repairs usually do not last longer than a few days or weeks. The same is true for loud renovations or certain types of construction people do around their homes.

Even cars and other vehicles aren’t as frequent during the night and other quiet hours. After all, most people are either at home or at work, leaving the roads less busy and, by extension, quieter.

However, it is not so easy to escape noisy neighbors, as they live near you and probably won’t be moving anytime soon. Thus, if they’re playing the drums every day, having loud get-togethers with friends, stomping loudly above you, or mowing the lawn at six in the morning, there isn’t much you can do to get away.

Luckily, this type of noise is also unreasonable if it occurs during quiet hours. In many cities and municipalities, quiet hours last between 10 pm and 7 am on weekdays and until 8 or 9 am on weekends. So, if your neighbors are making unnecessary noise during these hours, you have the right to complain and get them to stop.

Aside from quiet hours, you should also pay attention to the decibel levels of a certain sound. Most cities and towns have different decibel limits, but they mostly range between 70 and 90 decibels.

Therefore, if your neighbor is exceeding these levels and you are able to record it with a decibel meter, you will be able to file a complaint. If that noise is also happening during quiet hours, your complaint will be even more warranted.

Should You Report Unreasonably Loud Neighbors?

As already mentioned, you have the legal right to report any unreasonable noise happening during quiet hours. In addition, you can record the decibel level and check whether the noise is above the allowed decibel limit.

But should you do it right away? And how should you go about it in case a complaint is truly necessary? Here’s a guide that can help you.

Don’t Report Immediately

A mistake that many people make when it comes to unreasonable noise is reporting it as soon as it first occurs. For example, if your neighbor has never transgressed before, it hardly seems fair to call the police immediately. After all, they could be having a celebration or making noise for a particular reason outside of their control.

Whatever the case, it is essential to talk with your neighbor first. You should approach them civilly and cordially and ask what’s happening. Moreover, you can state that them making noise is disturbing you and hindering your ability to sleep, work, study, or go about your everyday routine.

In most cases, such a conversation will be enough. Namely, many people aren’t even aware of how others perceive their activities. Thus, your neighbor might not realize that the noise is too much for you.

Approaching them and making them aware of the situation is the first step you should take. As long as you remain calm and nice and talk about the problem without an accusatory tone, the issue will probably be resolved soon.

Moreover, you and your neighbor can agree on a schedule that would suit you both. For example, they can let you know when they might have people over to celebrate a birthday or a different special occasion. In turn, you can do the same, ensuring that everyone is okay with a little more noise from time to time.

That way, there won’t be arguments and issues when someone makes excess noise every now and then. As with all neighborly concerns, compromise is the key to harmony.

What If the Unreasonable Noise Persists?

Instead, you should report your neighbor to a local number that your PD reserves for non-urgent complaints. Every state has different numbers, and they might even differ between cities and counties. Thus, it is best to look for this number online prior to calling.

Moreover, you need to ensure that the law is on your side. To do so, you have to prove that the noise is happening during quiet hours and/or is exceeding the legal decibel limit. That way, the police will have grounds to warn your neighbor.

Reporting Unreasonable Noise

You will most likely have two ways to report unreasonable noise. First, you can give your local PD a call and do it that way. On the other hand, most PDs also allow residents to report unreasonable noise by filling out a form on their website.

Whichever way you opt for, the report will go similarly. You will have to describe the noise to the best of your ability, provide any proof you might have, and give some personal data. In most cases, that includes your name and ID number.

However, you will have a choice to make. Namely, you can decide whether you want to file the report anonymously or not. In the case of an anonymous report, the police are simply not allowed to reveal who reported the noise. It is usually best to do it anonymously, as you make things easier for everyone that way.

For one, you won’t open yourself up to any further inquiry by the police. In addition, you won’t risk the report turning into a prolonged public disturbance case against your neighbor. Even though their antics annoy you and disturb your peace, they usually do not deserve to go to court and suffer such severe consequences.

Thus, settle things anonymously if you can and let the police handle the rest.

After the Report

Of course, just reporting unreasonable noise to the police won’t result in officers arresting your neighbor. Rather, the police will pay them a visit and issue a warning.

In most instances, this warning is enough for people to take you seriously. If you are willing to involve the police, the neighbors will understand that the noise is truly disturbing you. From then on, they will probably try harder to keep the noise down and maintain peace in the area.

What If Not Even the Police Can Help?

Sometimes, neighbors can be equally as unreasonable as the noise they are making. So, if not even the police can make them stop partying and making all other types of noise at ungodly hours, all that’s left for you to do is to sue them.

Before you make any sudden decisions, it is important to understand what a lawsuit actually means and requires. For example, you will have to hire a lawyer and pay for the entire process, which is usually not that affordable.

Moreover, you will definitely need to provide indisputable evidence that your neighbor actually broke noise ordinance laws. That includes providing decibel level information, recordings, as well as proof that the noise occurred during quiet hours.

Civil lawsuits usually take a few months to resolve if all evidence is in order. However, if your neighbor decides to fight you and you both provide witnesses, the case could go on for more than six months. So, you should be prepared to pay for a full prolonged case before you file any suits.

In 1902 the construction of this section began, and since then, many additional rooms have been added. This is where most of the presidential meetings occur, and there are numerous offices for staff members.

Today the West Wing houses many rooms, which include:

The Oval Office

The oval office was designed by Nathan C. Wyeth and completed in 1909. Its design is based on the oval shape of the blue room and is the official office of the president.

Fun theory: It is rumored that former president Trump added a Coca-Cola button that he pressed and someone would bring him either a Diet Coke or a regular Coke. But, that’s hearsay and might not be accurate.

The Cabinet Room

The cabinet room is built in a Georgian style and is the official room where the president meets with his Cabinet and Heads of State. Each cabinet member has their own chair with a brass plate on the back, engraved with their name and position, which they can purchase when they leave office.

Rooms in the East Wing

The east wing only has two floors and mainly consists of offices. The first lady’s office, as well as her staff’s offices, can be found here. The Graphics and Calligraphy office can be located on this floor, as well as the White House family theater.

The east wing is built on top of the Presidential Emergency Operations Center, a bunker-like structure where the president is taken if there is an emergency.

The Basement

The basement structure is an addition to the mansion added during Harry Truman’s term and has numerous rooms as well as storage space, including:

You can also keep them inside your closet and arrange your clothes in a manner that makes them feel comfortable rather than stuffy.

If you’re sneaking in someone the size of a pro basketball player, hiding them can be more of a challenge. Scope out your house for any extra rooms where the person can hide. If additional rooms aren’t an option, consider whether they can conceal themselves in a place, such as behind your door, where they can sprint if someone comes into your room unannounced. 

Also, make sure the hiding place is as close to the person’s possible entry points as possible. You don’t want the person to tiptoe through the living room, the corridors, and other places people frequent to hide in a tiny closet.

2. Know Other Household Members’ Schedules Inside Out

If you’re not doing it already, pay close attention to the usual routine of the other people in your home.

Maybe Dad leaves the house at 5 AM and doesn’t come home until 7 PM on weekdays. Maybe your brother doesn’t leave the house except on Saturday mornings when he goes out to play with friends.

If you’re not sure about anyone’s schedules, ask them discreetly.

For example, if you heard that Mom would be away on a weekend trip, come up with a plausible statement like, “You know, I’m busy this week, and Dad might have mentioned it, but are you going away for the weekend by any chance? I want to know since I’ll be doing the chores while you’re away.”

Note the places with high foot traffic, like the living room and corridors, and cross those out. Mark all the possible entry points as “Point A,” “Point A1,” and so on. Mark all possible hiding places as “Point B,” “Point B1,” or other routes.

Figure out how to get the person from any Point As to any Point Bs without passing through the high foot traffic areas. If possible, map out at least three routes. That way, you’ll reduce your chances of getting caught in a bind if anything goes wrong.

4. Pick a Method of Communication During the Sneaking Time

Granted, you can text the person whenever it’s safe to enter your house. But it may help to have other means of communication, especially if you somehow lose access to your phone.

For example, if the person is your neighbor and you’re sneaking them in at night, you can use flashlights to signal them through your window. Just make sure no one else in the neighborhood will notice your lights.

Regardless of how you choose to communicate with each other, here are tips to keep in mind:

• Talk to the other person about the signals you’ll use.
• Use materials, like flashlights, you use every day and won’t arouse suspicion if anyone discovers them in your room.
• Make your signal unique enough that both of you’ll understand what it means, but not so unusual that anyone else who sees will wonder what’s going on.

5. Disable Alarms While Sneaking Into the House

If there’s no way to enter your house without tripping the alarms, disable them first before giving the person who’ll sneak in the “Go” signal. Remember to enable the alarms as soon as the person gets in safely, though.

The last thing you want is another less scrupulous stranger breaking into your home without your knowledge.

If your home doesn’t have alarms, but you have a dog who has a habit of barking at strangers, put the dog in a place where it won’t make much of a fuss. Lure your dog into a room with treats, and get it to fall asleep if possible. 

6. Ask the Person to Keep the Noise Down

Some people are lighter on their feet than others. If the person’s regular footsteps sound like a herd of panicked elephants, you can ask them to tiptoe into the house just this once.

If the person can’t help but be noisy on their feet, pick an entry point that makes as little noise as possible. For example, you can warn them about the creaking of the first step on the stairs to your room.

If the person is clumsy, clear out the area where they’ll sneak in, and explain this to your family members as you being responsible about your things.

If, after all the precautions you’ve taken, the person still ends up making a lot of noise, such as if they trip over a stack of books, come up with a plausible cover story. The moment someone asks: “What was that?”, reply with “I’ll check it out!”

After you pretend to check out the source of the noise, say something like, “Oh, I think a rat knocked over the books. Should’ve put them back on the shelf yesterday, ha ha ha!”

No matter where you hide the person you’re sneaking in, and no matter how long they’re staying in the house, it’s essential they feel comfortable throughout their stay. A relaxed person will be quieter than someone saying “Ouch!” all the time because their feet got squeezed too tightly into a corner or something.

If the person is hiding under your bed, clear out any dust or junk from down there.

Give them a blanket and a pillow so they can sleep soundly. If they’re staying longer, figure out how you can bring them food without arousing suspicion. The moment someone asks, “Wait, are those two plates of food?”, respond with “Yeah, I’m pretty hungry today. I was up all night doing homework.”

8. Anticipate Questions From Other Household Members

I’ve already noted a couple of questions family members might ask, like “What was that noise?” and “Wait, are those two plates of food?”

If you’re careful, you shouldn’t have to field too many questions. But if you have a particularly sharp and nosy family member, here are some questions you should prepare for and possible answers you can give.

• Why are you acting weird lately? “Oh, exams are coming up. They’re stressing me out, you know?”
• Who were you talking to up there? “I read an article the other day saying that talking out loud helps you think. I tried it out for myself, and what do you know, it works!”
• I think I saw someone who isn’t you come out of your room. “I think you’re tired and seeing things. Want to have a cup of tea?” / “I know someone who does cosplay, which is like dressing up as random fictional characters. I thought I should try that out.”

9. Prepare to Sneak Out of the House As Well

Of course, the person isn’t going to stay in your house forever. They’re going to leave eventually and as discreetly as when they snuck in.

Here’s how to sneak out of your house without getting caught:

• Take the map you used to determine the person’s route inside the house.
• Consider whether the entry points can be exit points as well.
• If the entry points can’t be exit points, find other exit points.
• When sneaking out, avoid the high foot traffic areas.
• Disable the alarms when the person is about to sneak out.
• Re-enable the alarms as soon as the person is out of harm’s way.
• Clean up any evidence that the person has ever been in the house.
• If you’re cleaning up the evidence mentioned above, do it at a time when the other household members aren’t out and about.

10. Prepare for Scenarios Where You Get Caught

As much as possible, you don’t want to get caught. After all, that would defeat the whole purpose of you reading this article. That said, the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.

If you do get caught sneaking someone into your house, here are your options.

• Feign ignorance. If your household members have never met the person before, pretending you don’t know them might work. You can be like, “Oh, I didn’t notice this person was here until now. They didn’t do anything bad though, so I’m showing them out right away.”
• Put on your best puppy dog face. If you know your household members can’t resist the face you make when you’re sad/upset about something, it might be worth a try.
• Give a sincere apology. If neither of the above options is plausible because your household members have seen through you, prepare to apologize. Take a deep breath, say you’re sorry for sneaking that person in, and don’t make excuses. If they ask why you did it, that’s the time to explain why you chose to sneak someone in instead of introducing them properly.
• Prepare for consequences. If you’re lucky, your household members might let you off with a warning not to do the same thing again.
